Fungus Gnats or Shore Flies? Identify Greenhouse Flies Before Treatment

Tiny flies around a wet greenhouse bench do not all require the same response. Fungus gnats and shore flies can occur together, but their larvae and feeding habits differ. Identify what you have, locate the breeding sites, and check crop roots before selecting a treatment. A cloud of adults alone is not a diagnosis of root damage.

Start with a hand lens, sticky cards, a bench map and a record of watering. If the insects are unfamiliar or plants are deteriorating, send suitable samples to a local diagnostic service. Do not identify an entire infestation from a distant photograph.

Compare the adults and larvae

UMass Extension’s greenhouse observations describe fungus gnat adults as slender, mosquito-like insects with long legs and antennae. Shore flies are more compact and resemble small house flies. Fungus gnat larvae have a distinct dark head on a pale, translucent body; shore fly larvae lack that obvious head capsule.

Fungus gnat larvae can damage roots, particularly in young plants. Shore flies feed mainly on algae and decaying material. This distinction matters when deciding whether the priority is a seedling root zone, an algae-covered wet surface, or both.

A sticky card catches mobile adults. It does not show every larva in the substrate or prove which species caused a wilted plant. Keep an unaffected comparison plant from the same crop and production stage available for examination.

Map the moisture, not just the flies

Walk the full route of water through the affected area. Look at misted trays, leaking connections, pots with poor drainage, accumulated media under benches, floor depressions and irrigation runoff. Include recently arrived plants and stored materials in the inspection.

For each wet patch, record when it appears and whether it dries between normal operations. A leaking fitting that wets an aisle continuously needs a different correction from a propagation programme that keeps the media surface wet longer than intended.

UMass’s vegetable guidance on fungus gnats and shore flies treats moisture, organic material and monitoring as part of management. Apply that principle at crop level: review the actual water requirement and drainage instead of imposing the same dry-down on every plant.

Do not deliberately wilt an entire bench to copy a forum success story. Newly rooted plugs and established containers have different tolerances. Adjust the relevant irrigation zone with the grower responsible for the crop, and check the response before broadening the change.

Make card counts comparable

Number monitoring locations and keep their placement and inspection interval consistent. Count each insect group separately. Note whether a card was moved, became covered in debris or remained in place longer than usual. A larger catch on an older card is not automatically evidence that the infestation accelerated.

Add a second column for breeding-site observations: larvae found, algae present, leak repaired and media condition. The combined record helps distinguish an adult nuisance that persists briefly from continuing production of new adults.

Select a few representative pots or trays for repeat inspection. Mark where they came from rather than moving symptomatic material around the greenhouse. If roots are damaged, include the irrigation and crop history with any laboratory sample.

Choose controls for the confirmed pest and production system

Biological products, nematodes and crop-protection products have specific target organisms and application conditions. An option that affects fungus gnat larvae may not control shore flies. Ask the supplier or crop adviser to match the programme to the identified species, media, crop stage and current treatments.

Do not reproduce a home-made soak, tank mixture or dose from a discussion thread. Use products permitted for the crop and place of use, following their current labels. Compatibility with beneficial organisms also needs to be checked when more than one control is used.

Before application, agree how success will be assessed. Reduced adults, fewer larvae, improved new roots and less algae are separate observations, and they may change at different times. Record the actual intervention date so the next count can be interpreted sensibly.

Prevent the same wet site from returning

Repair the water source, remove accumulated organic material by the site’s sanitation procedure, and keep access to the affected floor or bench. If the area remains continuously wet, treatment alone leaves the original breeding conditions in place.
