Greenhouse Seedlings Collapsing: Damping Off, Heat or Water Stress?

When seedlings fall over, inspect the stem at the media surface, the roots and the conditions in the tray before deciding on a treatment. Damping off is one possibility. Heat, uneven watering and weak elongated growth can also leave seedlings lying down. Adding more water or treating every tray as infected can make the wrong problem harder to resolve.

Start with the affected tray and a healthy tray of the same crop and sowing date. Record when the seedlings last looked normal and what changed: a move into the greenhouse, a sunny period, a watering event, a closed cover or a controller adjustment.

Look closely at the point of failure

Gently examine a small representative sample rather than pulling apart the whole batch. A thin, discoloured or rotted stem near the media surface and deteriorated roots are reasons to investigate damping off. A long seedling bent above an otherwise intact stem needs a different assessment. Photograph the whole plant, the stem base and the root zone separately.

The University of Minnesota damping-off guide explains that several soil-borne organisms can cause seed and seedling loss. Infected seedlings rarely become vigorous plants. It also describes how contaminated media, trays, tools and irrigation water can spread the problem.

These signs guide sampling; they do not identify an organism with certainty. A plant clinic can help when losses continue, several causes seem possible, or the crop is valuable enough that a mistaken treatment would be costly.

Reconstruct the previous day at tray level

A greenhouse may be mild when you enter in the morning but have overheated during the preceding afternoon. Check minimum and maximum readings near the seedlings, not only a thermostat on a wall. Note whether the sensor was shaded and whether a cover over the tray created a smaller enclosed space.

Assess moisture through the cell or pot. A dry-looking surface can sit above wet media; a wet edge can coexist with dry central cells. Compare the weight and condition of several containers across the tray. Verify that drainage holes are open and that the tray is not standing in unintended water.

Write down the distribution of damage. One exposed row, one irrigation zone, seedlings beneath a leaking pipe and scattered failures across several trays suggest different investigations. The pattern is most useful when recorded before trays are rearranged.

Contain suspected disease while checking the cause

Keep suspect trays separate from clean propagation material and avoid sharing their drainage water. Clean tools between the affected and unaffected areas using the production site’s procedure. Keep hose ends away from contaminated floors and media.

The Royal Horticultural Society’s damping-off guidance describes the role of hygiene, suitable growing conditions and avoiding excessively wet compost. Those principles do not mean that every tray should be left dry. Seed germination and newly developing roots still need appropriate moisture.

Do not add cinnamon, household disinfectant or a fungicide merely because a photograph online looked similar. If a product is needed, confirm the diagnosis, crop, permitted use and application instructions with an appropriate adviser. A product cannot rebuild a stem that has already decayed.

Decide whether to retain, separate or restart

Count the loss and assess the remaining root systems. Retain apparently healthy plants only with a way to keep monitoring them. Record the original sowing date so delayed or uneven plants are not quietly mixed into a uniform production batch.

When restarting, correct the suspected introduction route or growing condition first. Use appropriate clean propagation material, clean equipment and a crop-specific germination plan. Repeating the same watering programme in the same contaminated tray gives the new seed little advantage.

Avoid stacking several unmeasured changes together. If heat was documented, correct the heat exposure. If delivery was uneven, correct delivery. If disease was confirmed, implement the agreed sanitation and disease-management response. Record which correction addresses which finding.

Watch the next growth, not just the next photograph

Recheck surviving seedlings for upright growth, new leaves and an improving root system. Keep temperature and watering records with the tray label. Mark any new loss on the same map so an expanding patch can be distinguished from damage that stopped after one event.

For facilities growing seedlings alongside larger plants, separate their irrigation and monitoring needs in the greenhouse management plan. The next batch should benefit from a specific change in conditions or hygiene, not simply from a different label on the same routine.
