Tomato leaves can curl for several reasons. Green, rolled older leaves on an otherwise growing plant need a different investigation from twisted new growth, mottling, stunting or visible insects. Before adding fertiliser or removing plants, record which leaves changed first and examine the roots, irrigation and surrounding crop.

Leaf shape alone is not enough to distinguish environmental stress from herbicide injury or virus symptoms. The purpose of the first inspection is to decide what to measure and sample, while avoiding a treatment based on the wrong cause.
Read the pattern across the plant and the greenhouse
Start with the youngest leaves, middle canopy and older leaves separately. Note colour, texture, spotting and whether growth remains vigorous. Inspect undersides and growing points with magnification, then compare affected plants with nearby plants of the same variety.

Mark the affected positions on a simple bay map. A photograph of one leaf loses the information provided by the rest of the house.
Check water delivery instead of watering by the clock alone
Inspect moisture and roots in representative plants along the affected row. A programmed irrigation event proves that the controller issued a command; it does not prove that each plant received the intended amount. Confirm emitter output and whether drainage behaves consistently.
Check the event history. A hot afternoon, a line repair, a blocked emitter, a sudden change in pruning or a move between environments can be relevant. Write down what happened and when rather than assuming the most recent visible symptom began that same day.
Do not keep adding water to a saturated root zone because the leaves look stressed. Equally, do not let a dry container remain dry while waiting for a label. Correct a measured delivery or drainage fault using the crop’s irrigation plan, and retain observations of how the plants respond.
Look beyond the greenhouse thermostat
Take representative readings near the crop and record shading, ventilation and fan state. Compare the affected zone with an unaffected zone at the same time. A brief reading under mild conditions can miss the period that caused the stress.

Check the plant’s development as well as its leaf shape. Continued healthy new growth is a different finding from a crop that is becoming stunted or developing abnormal fruit. Record both rather than using one attractive-looking leaf as a pass or fail test.
Preserve the exposure history
If herbicide injury is a possibility, record nearby weed-control operations, spray timing, wind direction when known, and any new compost, manure or mulch. Do not accuse a particular source without evidence. Several conditions can produce overlapping symptoms.
If a virus or pest is suspected, keep samples and follow the local diagnostic service’s instructions for collection and handling. Avoid moving suspect plant material through clean propagation areas. A laboratory may request whole plants, selected leaves or a specific set of photographs depending on the suspected problem.
Keep a list of products already applied. A sequence of unrecorded sprays can make diagnosis harder and may affect biological controls. Do not apply a fungicide simply because the word “disease” has entered the discussion; the treatment must match the confirmed problem and permitted crop use.
Decide from new evidence
Revisit marked plants after correcting a documented fault or receiving a diagnosis. Compare new growth, root condition and the distribution of new symptoms. A previously rolled leaf may remain rolled, so leaf flattening is not the only useful outcome.
For irrigation-related findings, place the measurements alongside the greenhouse irrigation plan. If the cause remains uncertain or symptoms progress, seek crop-specific diagnostic help before changing the whole house. The objective is to preserve healthy production while resolving the cause, not to force every curled leaf into one explanation.
