Choosing Blueberry Cultivars for a Greenhouse: Chill, Dormancy and Timing

A warm greenhouse can protect blueberry flowers from cold and still leave the crop with poor, uneven bud break. A low-chill cultivar can suit one mild-winter program and bloom too early for another. A high-chill cultivar may survive winter perfectly but fail to receive the winter conditions it needs under protection.

These are cultivar-program mismatches, not greenhouse equipment faults.

Choose the plant first. Then design the winter, bloom and harvest environment around it. This article will help you:

  • separate chilling requirement from cold hardiness;
  • compare chill information without treating one model as universal;
  • connect bloom timing to frost and pollination risk;
  • prepare questions for the plant supplier and greenhouse designer.

Chilling and cold hardiness answer different questions

Chilling describes the cool exposure a dormant plant needs before normal spring growth can resume. Cold hardiness describes the plant’s ability to survive low temperature at a given stage.

A cultivar can have a high chilling requirement and strong dormant cold hardiness. Once its chilling is satisfied and buds begin to develop, flowers become more vulnerable. Warming the greenhouse to advance the crop can therefore reduce winter protection at the same time that it moves bloom into a risky period.

UF/IFAS describes this progression for Florida blueberry systems and notes that flower tissues become more susceptible as buds advance. It also cautions that critical temperatures established for northern highbush blueberries should not simply be transferred to southern highbush production in Florida. Chill is not “how much cold a plant can tolerate.” It is a seasonal development requirement. Frost tolerance changes as the plant moves from dormancy to open flower.

Ask which chill model produced the number

A cultivar sheet may state a number of chill hours, but the counting method matters.

The simple Chilling Hours Model often counts hours within a specified cool-temperature band. The Dynamic Model estimates chill portions and accounts for the way warm periods affect chill accumulation. Other regional models also exist.

UF/IFAS explains that winter temperatures above the effective range can change accumulated chill and that leaf retention may also affect chilling in Florida systems. These details are one reason a published number should be paired with its model and location.

Before accepting a chill figure, record:

If the supplier cannot identify the source of a chill number, use it as a screening estimate rather than a design input.

Start with the market window, then work backward

Protected production often aims to advance or delay harvest. Put the desired sales period on a calendar and work backward through:

1. expected harvest duration;

2. fruit development;

3. pollination and bloom;

4. bud break and heat accumulation;

5. chill completion;

6. autumn growth and flower-bud formation.

This exposes conflicts early. An early market window may require early bloom, yet the site may still have frequent frost. A cultivar with a very low chilling requirement may open before the farm’s pollination system is ready. A late cultivar may avoid frost but miss the premium market.

The greenhouse cannot solve every conflict at reasonable cost. Sometimes the better answer is a different cultivar, a later production block or a simpler rain-protection goal.

Build a cultivar scorecard

Do not rank cultivars on yield alone. Use categories that affect the whole protected system.

Score each item with evidence from local trials, the breeder, the nursery, an extension adviser or comparable farms. Leave an item blank when evidence is missing. A blank cell is more useful than a confident guess.

Professional grower note

Keep at least one small validation block before committing the whole greenhouse. Record phenology, chill accumulation, plant response, pack-out and labour. A greenhouse magnifies a cultivar mistake because the structure and operating plan were built around it.

Decide whether the crop is deciduous or evergreen

Southern highbush blueberries in Florida are managed in both deciduous and evergreen systems. UF/IFAS describes evergreen production as a system that maintains leaves through the winter to support early flowering and fruit set. That does not make evergreen production a global recipe. It shows how deeply the production strategy affects:

  • winter fertilization and irrigation;
  • leaf-disease control;
  • flower-bud development;
  • freeze exposure;
  • harvest timing.

State the intended winter state in the project brief. The greenhouse designer needs to know whether the goal is dormancy, protected dormancy, evergreen growth or forced early production.

Plan compatible cultivars for pollination and operation

Bloom overlap is necessary for cross-pollination, but it is not the only compatibility check. Cultivars sharing a block should also fit the same practical irrigation, crop-protection and harvest program.

Connect cultivar choice to greenhouse design

Send the designer these cultivar decisions:

  • winter state and chill model;
  • earliest and latest expected bloom;
  • frost-risk stages;
  • target harvest window;
  • summer heat period relative to fruit fill;
  • pollination method and access;
  • container or soil system;
  • block layout and cultivar mix.

The designer can then test venting, heating, shade, zoning and control logic against a real crop program. Without these inputs, “blueberry setpoints” are just placeholders.

Common planning failures

Selecting the lowest chill number available

Lower is not automatically safer. Early bud break can increase frost exposure and may miss the intended labour or pollination window.

Using a home-garden list for a commercial block

Home-garden recommendations often prioritize broad adaptability. Commercial production also needs pack quality, labour fit, harvest concentration, plant sourcing and buyer acceptance.

Assuming the greenhouse supplies chilling

An unheated structure may be warmer than outdoors during the day and behave differently at night. Measure the protected environment. Do not substitute the nearest outdoor weather station without checking.

Mixing cultivars that cannot share management

Bloom overlap may look good while pruning, fertigation, crop-protection or harvest requirements conflict.

Can artificial cooling replace natural winter chill?
